The Story of Beautiful Girl by Rachel Simon
Two individuals, a deaf man (Homan) and a woman with an intellectual disability (Lynnie), escape from an institution in Pennsylvania in 1968 with the woman's newborn daughter. The story plays out over several decades, and includes a host of issues germane to those with ID/DD including institutionalization and abuse, and the value of dedicated direct support professionals. A sibling herself, the author weaves in many social justice issues such as the rights to community living, romance and sexuality, self-expression, spirituality and independence.
